Picking an e-signature tool usually comes down to features and price. But there is a third axis that matters more than most people realize: where the file lives while you sign it.
What DocuSign and HelloSign do well
DocuSign defined the category. It handles complex workflows, multi-party routing, and deep integrations with CRMs, HR systems, and cloud storage. If your company needs conditional signing orders, field-level templates, and audit trails that plug into an enterprise compliance stack, DocuSign is built for that.
HelloSign, now Dropbox Sign, competes on simplicity. The interface is cleaner, the pricing is more accessible, and the Dropbox integration makes sense for teams already storing documents there. It covers the core workflow (upload, place fields, send, sign) with less overhead than DocuSign.
The shared assumption: your PDF goes to their server
Both tools follow the same model. You upload a PDF. It sits on their servers while parties review and sign. The signed copy lives in their cloud. For most teams, this is fine. It is less fine when the document is an NDA, a lease agreement, a side letter, or anything you would rather not store on a third-party file server for years.
The privacy question is not about whether these companies are trustworthy. It is about whether the file needs to leave your device at all to get a valid, verifiable signature.
Where VeriLock takes a different path
VeriLock computes a SHA-256 fingerprint of the PDF in your browser. The file itself is never uploaded. Signers connect through Nimiq wallets and sign against that fingerprint. When everyone agrees, a compact record (the hash, wallet addresses, and a timestamp) is locked on the Nimiq blockchain.
Later verification re-hashes the candidate PDF and checks the chain. It does not need a wallet, an account, or a subscription. Anyone with a copy of the file can confirm whether it matches what was locked.

HelloSign (Dropbox Sign) fits teams that want a simpler interface and already use Dropbox. It costs less than DocuSign for similar core signing features, with the same upload-to-cloud model.
VeriLock is the choice when the file should stay on your device. If you are signing an NDA, a contractor agreement, a lease, or any document where privacy of the file matters as much as the binding signature, the local-fingerprint model is a better fit than uploading to a cloud e-sign vendor.
