Is a VeriLock Signature Legally Binding? Understanding Intent and Integrity
Explore what VeriLock proves versus traditional e-sign compliance. Learn how blockchain fingerprints secure your PDFs without claiming legal status.
You have a lease to sign. A contractor needs an NDA. You want to use VeriLock because the file stays on your device. But will it hold up? This is the most common question we receive. The answer requires separating technical proof from legal frameworks.
What VeriLock Actually Proves
VeriLock does not claim to be a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) provider. We do not offer DocuSign-class compliance out of the box. Instead, we provide cryptographic certainty. When you sign, your wallet creates a local SHA-256 fingerprint of the PDF. This hash represents the exact state of your document at that moment.
We then put this hash on the Nimiq blockchain. This creates a permanent record. It proves who signed which specific file version and exactly when the lock occurred. No one can alter the PDF later without breaking the link to that on-chain record.

Intent, Identity, and Integrity
Legal validity often rests on three pillars. VeriLock handles two of them with extreme precision.
- Intent: You explicitly approve the transaction via your wallet. This action demonstrates clear consent to sign the specific hash presented.
- Integrity: The verify tool re-hashes any candidate PDF. If even one bit changes, the hash will not match the permanent record. Tampering becomes mathematically impossible to hide.
- Identity: Your signature comes from your unique wallet address. This links the act to your cryptographic identity.
However, linking that wallet address to your real-world legal name is a separate step. Traditional providers often handle identity verification through email logs or SMS codes. With VeriLock, you control your identity. For high-stakes agreements, you may need to pair your VeriLock signature with external proof of identity.
When to Use a Notary or Traditional Service
Some jurisdictions require specific workflows for real estate deeds or court filings. These rules often mandate centralized audit trails or specific certificate authorities. If your local law demands a QES or a centralized vendor audit, VeriLock alone may not satisfy those specific statutory requirements.
This post is for informational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice. Laws regarding electronic signatures vary by region and document type. Consult a qualified attorney for advice on your specific agreement.
For standard business contracts, NDAs, and internal agreements, the combination of wallet intent and immutable blockchain records offers strong evidence. It shows exactly what was signed and ensures the document has not changed since that moment.
The Value of a Permanent Record
Disputes often arise months later. Did we agree to clause 4b? Was page 3 swapped? A VeriLock signature answers these questions instantly. You do not need to trust a vendor's database. You simply verify the file against the public chain.
The blockchain does not care about opinions. It only records mathematical truth. If the hash matches, the document is identical to the one signed.

This approach shifts trust from a company server to open mathematics. Your PDF never leaves your device. The proof lives forever on Nimiq.
Cost to Lock Your Agreement
Securing your document requires a small fee to put the hash on-chain. As of July 2026, the standard list price is 1000 NIM. We are currently running a promotion with 50% off, bringing the cost to 500 NIM. This promo ends August 1.
